A story of hope and perseverance against all odds, Formula 1 driver Alex Zanardi overcame severe physical trauma to rise again as one of the greats of the sport.

image

After winning the CART Championships in 1997 and ’98 then moving to Formula 1, Alex Zanardi was thought of as one of the greatest drivers in the world. Then, the unthinkable— he lost both his legs in a horrific crash in Germany. However, he did not succumb to defeat. He learned to walk again and did the seemingly impossible: he returned to auto racing and won the World Touring Car Championship. Then, in perhaps his greatest victory yet, he became the 2012 Paralympic Champion in the London Paralympics, compteing in the individual H4 time trial and the individual H4 road race, winning a silver medal in team competition.

image

From the Cold War capitals of Berlin and Moscow, to exotic destinations like Hong Kong and Cairo, if you can think of a hot spot around the globe – he’s been undercover there. Our host Tony Shaffer is going to pull back the curtain on some of the most interesting and glamorous cities in the world, and reveal exciting stories that will show viewers a side of these towns that few people have ever seen. In this series, Tony’s perspective is not that of the normal tourist. In his past life as a spy, traveling through a foreign city was about missions, contingencies, staying alive, and getting back home in one piece. His profession demanded him to familiarize himself with a city inside and out. From the crowded tourist attractions where he could hide in plain sight, to the hidden, obscure corners where secrets were traded, Tony has seen every city on the globe from a remarkable perspective. A perspective born out of the need to stay alive.

In Africa, 1 in 39 women will die during childbirth. 1 in 7 women will suffer serious complications as a result of giving birth. 1 in every 6 children will die before the age of five.

image

One woman believes she can change those numbers. This documentary follows the efforts of philanthropist Ann Gloag, who has single-handedly financed a number of hospitals in Africa with the goal of eradicating fistula in African women. Fistula is a dire condition that condemns those affected to a life of incontinence, spiraling infections, and ostracization from their communities. Ann brings in doctors, trains midwives, and transforms the lives of these women. Also, with the help of Opportunity International, a micro-finance organization that operates in the developing world, she supplies these women with a device called a BBOXX. The BBOXX is a solar-powered generator that literally brings light into these women’s lives. Shout Gladi Gladi tells an incredible story, not just about the unimaginable suffering of women in developing nations, but also about one foundation and its unique take on empowering women and enacting change.

The dangerous world of LA gangs as seen through the eyes of two LAPD Citywide Gang Unit detectives as well as those who are either in “the life,” affected by gangs in the community, or who are attempting to manipulate gangs for personal gain (either financial or political). The LAPD Citywide Gang Unit tries to do good in the community but are constantly clipped by local politicians and the LAPD’s brass, not to mention the threat of violence from the gangs themselves. This is a world where there are no angels, merely cops and regular folks trying to make it through the day.

A unique journey into the culinary world of chef/author Phoebe Lapine and her re-imagining of all those comfort foods we have a love/hate relationship with.

image

As a young chef appealing to urbanites, Phoebe has mastered the idea of cooking great-tasting foods in the small apartment kitchens in which so many twenty-something city dwellers reside. That means not only eating lots of good food, but also allowing some of the guilty pleasures into your life. Kale lasagna is not just good for you— it’s great lasagna in the way only a classic melty lasagna can be! Self-deprivation is not the road to gastronomic nirvana, and Phoebe is just the person to help remove the guilt and restore the joy we get from eating. Whether that’s munching down slow-roasted cherry tomatoes or indulging in Sriracha-infused deviled eggs, Phoebe’s got just the recipe for you!
